More about your test

What is this test used for?

Used as part of the investigation or monitoring of plasma-cell disorders, including multiple myeloma, light-chain disease and related monoclonal gammopathies. It is usually interpreted alongside blood tests such as serum protein electrophoresis, immunofixation and serum free light chains.

Understanding your results

Bence Jones proteins are not normally present in significant amounts in urine. Detection of a monoclonal light chain may indicate abnormal production of immunoglobulin proteins, but an abnormal result does not by itself establish a diagnosis. Results require interpretation alongside other laboratory findings and the patient's clinical assessment.

Reports & optional interpretation

Your completed report and downloads appear as soon as the laboratory submits them, including flagged results. We recommend professional review where results are flagged or unclassified; booking a consultation is optional.

Where available, you can add a separately priced written interpretation at checkout. A consultation is included only when stated in the selected service. Laboratory turnaround estimates do not include interpretation time.
