This blood test detects IgM antibodies to the hepatitis A virus (HAV). These antibodies usually appear during a recent or acute hepatitis A infection, so the test is primarily used when someone has symptoms or a suspected recent exposure to hepatitis A.

No fasting is generally required. Follow the testing laboratory's collection instructions. Some assay platforms may require avoidance of high-dose biotin-containing supplements before collection, so partner-specific instructions should take precedence. It is advised that it is best to avoid biotin-containing supplements for 24 hours before its assay.
This is primarily a diagnostic test for suspected acute hepatitis A, not a general screening test. It should usually be ordered when symptoms, exposure history or other clinical findings suggest possible hepatitis A. The CDC specifically advises against using IgM anti-HAV as a routine screening test in asymptomatic people.

Used to help diagnose acute or recent hepatitis A infection in people with compatible symptoms or relevant exposure history. The CDC identifies serum IgM anti-HAV as one of the principal laboratory markers of acute HAV infection.
A negative/non-reactive result means IgM antibodies to HAV were not detected, although very early infection may occasionally test negative. A positive/reactive result may indicate current or recent hepatitis A infection, but interpretation should consider symptoms, exposure history and other laboratory findings because false-positive or cross-reactive results can occur. Recent hepatitis A vaccination can also affect interpretation.
