HbA1c measures the proportion of haemoglobin in the blood that has glucose attached to it. It reflects a person's average blood glucose level over approximately the previous 2–3 months and is widely used to screen for, diagnose and monitor diabetes.

No fasting is usually required. You may eat and drink normally before the test unless you have been given other instructions. Tell your healthcare professional if you have a known haemoglobin disorder, significant anaemia, recent blood loss or transfusion, or if you are pregnant.

Suitable for most adults for diabetes screening and monitoring. HbA1c may be less reliable in some circumstances, including certain haemoglobin disorders, significant anaemia or altered red-blood-cell turnover. Pregnancy also requires specific interpretation and clinical guidance.

Used to help identify people at increased risk of type 2 diabetes, support diagnosis of diabetes, and monitor long-term blood glucose control in people who already have diabetes. It is also useful for assessing how well lifestyle changes or diabetes treatment are working.
A higher HbA1c generally indicates a higher average blood glucose level over recent months. In non-pregnant adults, an HbA1c of 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) or above is commonly used as a diagnostic threshold for diabetes; in an asymptomatic person, an abnormal result usually requires confirmation rather than diagnosis from a single result alone.
